Standout Aspects

Acting

Lombard's comic timing saves this from total melodrama.

Costume

Tropical glamour and nightclub sequins, 1930s perfection.

Direction

Leisen knows when to let the music breathe.

Best for:Date Night: When you want to warn your partner about musicians.·Solo: Depression-era glamour and self-destructive men, name a better combo.·Rewatch: Spotting Lombard's genius in a role that deserved better.
Heads up:Emotional: The second half is basically watching love die slowly.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Trivia

This was Lombard and MacMurray's third pairing; their chemistry was so combustible they made four films together.

Cultural

Released just before the Hays Code fully clamped down—note how freely Maggie lives with two men, scandalous for '37.
