Three years after the defeat of Gargoyle and Neo-Atlantis, a new threat has surfaced bent on bringing the world under his control. Geiger, using advanced robot technology, is attempting to begin a world war, and take control of the devistated world after the destruction has stopped. This film exists because Gainax needed quick cash after the expensive series finale. Miyazaki's Nausicaä influence on the original made this corporate mandate extra awkward.
The 'filler episodes' director Sho Aono returned for this, not the series finale director. Fans noticed immediately and never forgave it.
