Lars Ulrich moved to LA in 1980 specifically to find similar musicians after discovering NWOBHM — without this scene, Metallica literally doesn't exist.
The 'New Wave' label was actually coined by Sounds journalist Geoff Barton in 1979 as a marketing joke that stuck, forever annoying purists who insisted it wasn't a 'wave' at all.
