O Chefe do Meu Pai Era um Democrata e Ninguém Sabia (2024)

whimsical historicalworking-class heartCarnation Revolution realness

Overview

ComedyDrama

An entertaining TV movie that tells us how the transition from the Estado Novo to democracy took place on April 25. All this through the eyes of a child, the daughter of a dutiful employee who always had to submit, even if he disagreed, to his boss's despotism in order to provide for his family. Until the day when she simply wanted to enjoy the day of absolute promise, so long awaited, with her daughter.

Deep Dive

Trivia, insights & behind the scenes

Cultural

April 25, 1974 remains Portugal's most photographed revolution — famously bloodless, with carnations replacing bullets in rifle barrels.

Insight

Director Mónica Santos uses the child's limited perspective to mirror how most Portuguese experienced regime change — through rumor, family whispers, and sudden public joy.
