Director Sarah Jacobson was a riot grrrl filmmaker who championed women's stories; she died of cancer in 2004 at 32, making this preservation of her voice doubly precious.
The original 1982 film was shelved for two years, given a limited theatrical run with three minutes cut, then became an MTV staple and directly inspired Bikini Kill and other third-wave feminist musicians.
