Henri Cartier-Bresson appears briefly as himself — he was Rivette's cameraman and had just returned from photographing the last days of the Chinese Civil War.
This was part of a French television initiative to preserve cinematic heritage — ironically, it's now considered one of the most important documents of French cinema itself.
