Trivia, insights & behind the scenes
The wreck spawned Canada's unofficial maritime anthem before anyone knew what happened; Lightfoot recorded 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' in 1976 while theories were still competing in newspapers.
The 1995 expedition marked the first time civilians paid to visit the wreck site — the $20,000-per-person 'tourism' aspect sparked ethical debates about grave sites that continue today.
