Tomino notoriously disliked the original Zeta ending so much that he rewrote Kamille's fate multiple times across different media, including having him recover in the novelization.
The 'New Translation' films were created partly to reconcile Zeta with Tomino's later Gundam works, retroactively making Char's eventual villainy in Char's Counterattack feel more inevitable.
